Quick Help

This section will be a quick reference for beginners and people who don't want to know how the name works, just how to make it work. Here are the steps:

1. Highlight the text in the "Your name" text box (see fig. 1) and go to the Edit menu in the browser and select "Copy" [Ctrl-C also copies].

fig. 1

2. Open your favorite text editor [Notepad, Wordpad are examples] and go to the Edit menu and select "Paste" [Ctrl-V also pastes].
3. Surround the group of characters with quotation marks and type the word "name" in front of them. What you have should look something like fig. 2.

fig. 2

4. Select "Save As" from the File menu of the text editor and find your quake directory [usually, it's C:\QUAKE\ - see fig. 3]. Then select the "ID1" directory inside of it. Change "Save as type:" to "All files (*.*)". Type "name" in the "File name" text box and press "Save".

fig. 3

5. Start Quake. Open up the console [press the ~ key next to the 1 on your keyboard], and type "exec name.txt". You should see "execing name.txt", as in fig. 4. If you see "couldn't exec name.txt" then go back to step 1 and try again.

fig. 4

Then that's it! Every time you play, you must "exec" the name file, but it will work. If you want to know better (but more difficult ways) to get a name to work, read the complete help section* (*unavailable).
